Arty teens show they have a touch of glass

A group of over 30 teenagers have curated a new ‘stained glass’ window exhibition, which will be showcased for the first time on Wednesday 8 June at the Phoenix Detached Youth Project

Working in partnership with Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums, Phoenix Detached Youth Project invited the young people who are currently not in employment, education or training to take part in the six week project, which encouraged the group to engage and interact with art.

Anita Moffitt, assistant outreach officer at Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums says:

“This has been a very exciting and successful project with the whole group taking part and contributing their own ideas for the final exhibition. Many of the young people have never been involved with a project like this before and have thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience.”

Inspiration for the tailor made window panels arose after the group attended a special session organised by the Shipley Art Gallery, during which they were able to view images and objects from the Gallery’s contemporary arts and crafts collection.

Following this, a series of art workshops with artist Sharon Wilson encouraged the group to develop their own ideas for the design of the window panels and where their final location should be.

Anita Moffitt continues:

“The idea behind the window panels is to highlight the work that the Youth Project does in the North Tyneside area and to promote young people in a positive light to the local community.”

The window panels form the final part of a recent £9000 refurbishment of the Centre, which will also be unveiled at the launch event next week.
