My time at the Phoenix Detached Youth Project: A Students Tale….

My time at the Phoenix Detached Youth Project: A Students Tale….

Where do I start about my time here at the Phoenix…..With no experience in the field of Youth work and no expectations my first day came, then went and by the time I realised here I am sitting reflecting on my experiences here and what I have achieved. I have definitely been made welcome from the staff and the individuals who use the Phoenix DYP. As part of my learning I have been able to apply my social work teaching in a practical environment allowing me to understand a range of issues that I have worked with individuals and groups. I have been able to work with other professionals and see how other agencies operate which allowed me to further my knowledge of the community and surrounding areas. I have tested my personal skills such as problem solving, negotiating and the ability to challenge decisions in a productive way which again allow me to grow. Interactions, group work and a residential experience over the summer period with young people has further developed my listening and interpersonal skills. Learning and reflecting with the staff here at the Phoenix has allowed me to challenge my own values and beliefs and recognise it is important to involve and empower others. Activities such as canoeing, coastal steering and detached youth work in the community have all given me the confidence and ability to push myself to try new experiences whatever my reservations. Overall my days have been so varied you really don’t know what the next day can bring. To end I have certainly learned a great deal both personally and professionally from the staff and individuals who use the project which will help me in my career as a social worker. I want to say a huge thank you to all of the staff and young people for your support throughout my time here.
